Nexos-GE calls upon international mediators for the release of all political prisoners and prisoners of conscience in Equatorial Guinea

In its capacity as a human rights platform, NEXOS-GE has witnessed recent human rights violations perpetrated against social activists and human rights defenders in Equatorial Guinea. Such is the case of Liberato BIACHÓ BILELO (alias Bobi, activist of the Association Sons of Bioko) and of Anacleto MICHA NDONG NLANG (activist of the human rights platform Guinea Nuestra), both arbitrarily arrested and tortured by the security forces of the regime, and currently unaccounted for.

Liberato BIACHÓ BILELO, through audios distributed on social networks, denounces the dysfunctions and shortcomings of state-owned entities such as SEGESA (Servicio Eléctrico de Guinea Ecuatorial, Sociedad Anónima) and INSESO (Instituto de la Seguridad Social), as well as their failure to attend to citizens who still contribute financially to their support, through payment of bills and contributions.

Anacleto MICHA NDONG NLANG, for his part, was arrested for demanding, via social networks, the release of political prisoners and prisoners of conscience who have been scattered around the country's prisons for years. Such as Liberato Biachó Bilelo, Jerónimo Ndong Mesi, Isabel Maye Eló Bilogo, Rubén Maye, and the leaders of MLG3R. Through his message, the concerned party urged the regime to put an end to "dictatorship, state terrorism, kleptocracy, nepotism, institutional corruption and illicit enrichment, as well as the systematic violation of human rights in Equatorial Guinea".

The unlawful detention and isolation of both activists constitutes a violation of the obligations acquired by the State of Equatorial Guinea under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, as well as of its own domestic law, specifically Article 13 of the current Fundamental Law, which regulates fundamental rights.

Consequently, in view of the political submission of the judiciary, and the resulting non-existence of internal legal channels to challenge the actions of the dictatorial regime prevailing in our country, the NEXOS GE platform appeals to the governments of friendly countries, to the competent bodies of the European Union and the UN, in order to mediate for the immediate release of Liberato BIACHÓ BILELO and Anacleto MICHA NDONG NLANG, as well as all political prisoners and prisoners of conscience held in prisons and detention centres in the national territory.

Given the seriousness and recurrence of human rights violations perpetrated in general against political dissidents and human rights activists, the NEXOS GE platform calls on the Commission of the European Union to agree, as a matter of urgency, to adopt sanctions against the perpetrators.
