Nexos campaigns for human rights and democracy in Equatorial Guinea at the European Parliament

On February 13th, 2024, in Bruxelles, Nexos denounced the large-scale systemic abuse of human rights taking place in the country and urged the European Union to back efforts towards democratisation. At a discussion hosted by MEP Jordi Cañas (Spain) and Renew Europe at the European Parliament under the theme ‘Moving Towards a Democratic Future’, Nexos deepened the debate on the socio-political situation in Equatorial Guinea and the path forward to democracy.

During the event, members of Nexos shared their aspirations and vision for a truly democratic Equatorial Guinea, highlighting the NGO’s role in the democratisation of the country. The event featured discussions on the socio-economic situation in Equatorial Guinea and the path to democracy, featuring key remarks by Juan Carlos Ondo Angue, Founder and President of Nexos, and MEP Jordi Cañas, Vice-Chair of Renew Europe.

Juan Carlos Ondo Angue, President and Founder of Nexos, said:

“Equatorial Guinea has been held hostage under the current dictatorship for far too long. My fellow Equato-Guineans deserve and demand better than what has been offered to them over the last four decades. We demand justice. We demand freedom. We demand democracy.”

Through Nexos, we have, for the first time in our history, brought together an unprecedented coalition of experts, civil society leaders, policymakers and members of the diaspora to join forces and define a future worthy of Equatorial Guinea. This is the beginning of a vital journey that will lead us to a more prosperous future for all.”

MEP Jordi Cañas stated:

“For far too long, there has been a lack of attention to the widespread oppression of the Obiang regime in the European Union. We are glad to welcome back the leadership of Nexos-GE to the European Parliament to raise awareness of the situation in the country and outline their plans to bring about a democratic change in Equatorial Guinea.

Democratic unity today is essential for democratic change tomorrow. I congratulate the Nexos platform for bringing together so many diverse groups in the fight for democratic values in Equatorial Guinea. We stand by Nexos-GE now and will continue to do so in their journey ahead."

In view of the alarming human rights situation in Equatorial Guinea, the Nexos called on the European Union and its Member States to actively defend human rights and promote democratic principles, the rule of law and good governance, all of which are priority objectives of the Samoa Agreement between the European Union and Africa.
