NEXOS-GE denounces the worsening of human rights violations in Equatorial Guinea and calls for an international investigation

On Monday, Radio Macuto published a press release by NEXOS-GE denouncing the systemic violations of human rights in Equatorial Guinea, which have intensified since President Teodoro Obiang Nguema delegated control of the defence and security fores to his son, Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue.

NEXOS-GE concludes that the report presented by the Obiang regime at the recent United Nations Universal Periodic Review (UPR) reflects the persistent denial and concealment of human rights violations, which have been widely documented in complaints from activists, human rights organisations,, and in an ongoing criminal action before the National Court of Spain.

The UPR report highlights the lack of an independent judiciary in Equatorial Guinea, which limits victims’ access to effective legal remedies for the human rights abuses they suffer.

NEXOS-GE calls on the European Union, the UN General Assembly, and all State party to the Samoa Agreement to promote the creation of an international commission of inquiry to address the violations of civil, political, economic, and social rights perpetrated by the Obiang regime.

NEXOS-GE warns that the current authoritarian drift of the Obiang regime represents a threat not only to the stability of Equatorial Guinea, but also to the subregion in general.
