Juan Carlos Ondo Angue speaks out against persecution

There is evidence that the authoritarian Obiang regime in Equatorial Guinea extends its persecution beyond its borders. Founder and President of Nexos, Juan Carlos Ondo Angue, spoke with Publico about his personal experience of persecution.

Juan Carlos spoke candidly about the continued threat to his life that he faces, despite being exiled from the country since 2020. His experience is another example of the human rights abuses perpetuated by the Obiang regime in order to maintain power. Other victims of this persecution include Pedro Germán Tomo, Eloy Eló Nvé, and Bonifacio Nguema Nsono; not all have survived.

Threats and assassination are a tool used by the regime to maintain their power in Equatorial Guinea. The European Union and its Member States must actively defend human rights and promote respect for democracy to abide by the priority objectives of the Samoa Agreement between the European Union and Africa.

As Juan Carlos said:

“The regime invokes non-interference to legitimise itself as a sovereign nation. But it is not, because a person who holds power by fraud does not represent the people, but rather imposes himself on them. The population calls for the right to humanitarian assistance.”
