NEXOS-GE statement on the regime’s reporting in the UPR 2024

The longest ruling dictator in Africa, Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, routinely targets and attacks opposition to his regime. Founder and President of Nexos, Juan Carlos Ondo Angue, spoke with TV5 Monde about the situation in On Monday, Radio Macuto published a press release by NEXOS-GE criticising the report presented by the government of Equatorial Guinea to the United Nations Human Rights Council for the country’s Universal Periodic Review.

NEXOS-GE highlighted the systemic nature of human rights violations in Equatorial Guinea, in particular the complaints made by international and national human rights organisations and by independent activists. It also highlighted the lack of accessible and effective remedies regarding human rights violations, given the autocratic regime’s influence over the judiciary.

NEXOS-GE requests the European Union group in the United Nations General Assembly and all States party to the Samoa Agreement to appoint an international commission of inquiry. This body would both investigate ongoing crimes against humanity in Equatorial Guinea and hold those responsible to account, including those at the highest level of authority.

This international commission must be linked to the criminal proceedings initiated by the Spanish National Court, as well as complaints made by human rights activists. Another point of focus must be the vast network of embezzlement in the current regime that has allowed Obiang and his family to misappropriate public funds.
